The Striped Wanderer: Zebras of the Savanna

Zebras are among the most iconic animals of the savanna, instantly recognizable by their black-and-white stripes. But did you know that no two zebras have the same pattern? These unique stripes are not just for show—they help confuse predators by creating an optical illusion when zebras move in herds, making it harder for predators to target a single individual.

Zebras are highly social and form large herds for protection. Within these herds, smaller family groups are led by a dominant male, or stallion, who defends his group from predators and rival males. Zebras communicate through a range of vocalizations, from barks and brays to squeals, and even use facial expressions like showing their teeth to signal aggression.

Life in the savanna is tough, and zebras must constantly migrate to find fresh grass and water. Their migrations often align with wildebeest, forming massive herds that travel across the savanna together. Conservation efforts focus on preserving these migration routes, ensuring zebras have access to the resources they need to survive.
